The last of the Eibenstock embroidery?

Here is a lovely example of a 1970s long length slip made in the town of Eibenstock in Saxony, then in the former communist state of East Germany (DDR). Eibenstock became a centre for fine embroidery in the 19th century and its embroidered fabrics were highly sought after the world over. By far Eibenstock's biggest customer for its wares was the United States of America - so much so that the Americans opened a consulate in the town to further the trade between the two locations. The First and Second World Wars sent the town's embroidery industry into a steep decline and standards were never the same after that, although the trade carried on well into the 20th century.

Crossover bust

This pretty slip is made by W.Ziegler & Co of Eibenstock and is of silky soft lemon nylon with delightful machine embroidered black floral design over organza to the crossover bust, as well as to the hemline - which also has a side split. Altogether an adorable 'ostalgie' slip in almost mint condition and highly wearable and collectable.
